PLUNKET-SHIELD MATCH.

mm FOR WELLINGTON.

7 COLLAPSE OF OTAGO

GREAT OPPORTUNITY LOST,

FINE DISPLAY BY CAVANAGH

[BY TEL!'. GRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDES 1 , Monday.

The Plunket Shield match between Otago and Wellington was concluded on the Carisbrook ground to-day, , when the home side collapsed with victory in sight. The weather was warm and sunny and the wicket was in good order. Wellington had six wickets down for 122 runs in tho second innings when play •was resumed this morning, and; the innings was brought to a close before lunch with tho total 172. This left Otago 258 to make to win. Fivo wickets had fallen in the home team's second innings ior 180, and tho position looked rosy for la win with only 78 runs to get with fivo .wickets yet to fall. But Cavanagh's dismissal was oidy the preface to disaster. colt had played a good innings for 87, but the Otago captain Alloo went out a. few minutes after him, and tho remaining four wickets fell before 1200 was reached, the innings closing for 193. Sliepiherd and Cavnnagh alone made a creditable showing for the home side Dismissal of McGirr. McGirr (15) and Ward resumed Wellington's innings this morning to the fcowlDig of Elmo.s and Dunning, in whose second, over Ward played a ball iuto the slips, where Elmes missed a low catch. 'The fieldsman atoned for iiis mistake, however, by bowling Ward in Ibis next ever. 126- —7—o.- Lainason joined McjGirr, but made only egiht before Dunning jclean bowled him. Newman was next man in. McGirr reached 40 by pulling Jjemin to the boundary for four. However, Dunning ended McGirr'a inJiirigs by' bowling him with a. yorker. 169—9—40. For the first time McGirr left the wicket at Carisbrook with a score "of less than 50. Dnnning had now taken four wickets for 53. Henderson partnered Newman, who gave a difficult chance in' the slips which Dunning failed jto take. The innings closed when McIMullan fielded a drive to cover by Newman and returned in time for Henderson to be ran out. 172—10—4.

Shepherd and Knight opened Otago's second innings, nod Shepherd settled down alroosl immediately to one of the best exhibitions of cricket seen on the ground this season. Knight wis slower than usual getting a start, and had scored only five when Shepherd reached 50 Knight's innings came to a ciase before he scored any more. For a batsman of Siis experience he made an unpardonable mistake when he put out his bat to an off ball and placed a neat catch for the visiting captain. A Productive Partnership.

Cavanagh joined Shepherd, who survived an appeal for lbw by Baker, ;whom ho drove for three to bring 40 up iafter half an hour's play. He was treating Henderson with scant respect, and brought 50 up after 38 minutes. Shepherd .was playing delightful cricket, and the xuns were mounting up steadily when ho ekied a ball from Henderson into the hands of Badcock. 62—2—49. Shepherd monopolised tho scoring while he was at tho wicket and made his 49 in 48 minutes. He was quick to punish anything loose iand never gave a chance. Elmes joined Cavanagh after lunch, and runs came quickly. Elmes brought 90 up with a four to square leg, and was then clean: bowled by Baker. 92 —4—14. 'Alloo partnered Cavanagh, who was well set. At this stage play was stopped while an annoying rubbish fire in an adjoining section was extinguished. Cavanagh brought up the century with a couple off McGirr. '/ Cavanagh Given Ovation. With the total at 105 Badcock replaced Baker and Cavanagh drove him to the boundary. Two balls later he pulled him to the fence- again," and reached 40 by - driving him for three. Alloo gob his third run after being at the wickets for over half an hour. At 59 Cavanagh gave a chance almost at the boundary, where Ward missed a catch. This took the partnership score past 50, and 150 came •up when Cavanagh drove Baker to the off for four. After being an hour at the ■wickets Alloo secured his tenth run and brought 160 up. Cavanagh's excellent effort concluded *vhen he was given out lbw to Baker. He received an ovation on returning. 180—5—87. With five ( wickets to fall and only 78 . runs required to win, Otagc's chances looked bright. Alloo went out, however, in tho same way off the first ball of Hoilings' next ever Dunning made two before he was beaten by Holiirigii. 182 — 7—2. Groves arrived to see Moloney return a catch to Baker." After, the tea adjournment Heeiian faced Baker, who clean bowled him when he had madi3 three. With the total at 188 Lemin was dropped at the boundary by Lamason, but the next ball he placed in Ward's hands ab the other fence. 195—10 —6. Scores are:— WELLINGTON.
