CARNIVAL AT MILFORD.

SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMME.

SWIMMING AND LIFE-SAVING.

Large crowds gathered at- Milford beach yesterday for a carnival conducted by .the Milford Surf and Life-Saving Club, the first of its kind that the club has held. Favoured by warm sands and a calm sea, the club was fortunate in the conditions for its venture. The full length of the beach was covered with thousands of people, whose attention was fully occupied during the afternoon by the extensive programme of events, both on the sands and in the water.

The programme opened with a treasure hunt for the children, whose enthusiasm did not flag even until dusk. In hundreds they dug. in the enclosure until it seemed that not an inch had escaped their attention. There followed a series of sports events on the beach in which both young and old were represented. Then the swimming events were decided, providing the greatest excitement of the day. The public entered into the spirit of the occasion with the greatest enthusiasm, and the entries for all events were large. The carnival closed with a demonstration of life-saving by the Milford Life-Saving Glub, an attraction which proved the most popular on the programme.

At the close of the carnival the prizes were presented by the Mayor of Takapuna, Mr. J. W. Williamson. Four silver cups had been presented by the Herbert Smith trust fund, and these were allotted to the four Milford boys' and girls' swimming championships. The other prizes were donated by the Milford Surf Club, with the help of the local tradesmen. v Following are the results of the swinging events, which were conducted with / the. help of the North Shore Amateur : Swimming Clnb: — 40 Yards, boys, 9to 12.—V.
