HEATHER CUP EVENT.

VICTORY FOR HEARTSEASE,

GOOD BREEZE FOR SAILING

A class, 'first-class yachts. First prize Heather Cup nnd miniature and £ls. second prizo £B, third prize trophy valued at £5 ss, presented by Milne and Clioyce, Ltd. 11l the race for first-class yachts, which was started at. 11 a.m.. Victory showed the way over the line, with Nga Toa, lorangi. Ariki. I'rize, Rawene and Ida following. Moulin and Thelma were about two minutes late, the latter having been forced over the lino at the start and having to return. Heartsease was three minutes late. The westerly wind gave tho boats a spinnaker run to tlio Bastion, and tho light sails were smartly hoisted on the various craft, with the exception of lorangi and Rawene. Ariki was in the lend at the Bastion beacon, nnd the next round tho mark was lorangi. followed by Prize, Nga Toa and Victory. Then came Rawene, Thelma, Moaiia, Ida and Heartsease. Ariki was first round tho channel mark, with lorangi. Thelma and Nga Toa following. Victory had the misfortune to carry away her mainsail at the mark, and was compelled to retire.

On the beat back to the harbour Ariki was still in the lend, but at the eastern tide deflector she was passed by lorangi, the order rounding this mark being lorangi, Ariki, Thelma, Nga Toa, Rawene, Prize, all within a few seconds of ono another. A little later came Moana, Ida and Heartsease.

On the run down the harbour for tho second time Rawene and Prize kept close together, being level off Orakei. lorangi was slill in the lead at the Bastion beacon, Ariki having closed up on her on tho run from the eastern tide deflector. Well below North Head, Ariki overhauled lorangi, and was now in the lead. In the channel Thelma. which had been sailing ft great race, took command, and passing the Bean Rock lighthouse for the final beat homo was leading lorangi, Ariki, Nga Toa, Rawene and Prize.

Ariki. standing close in to the lighthouse, touched tho sunken rock known as the Doris Rock, off tho lighthouse, but continued in the race. Thelma, Nga Toa, lorangi and Ariki wore all vei'y close together when beating up the harbour from the Bastion m..rk, only a few seconds separating these four boats. Ariki was holding third position on the beat up to tho finishing line, but Nga Toa, which was following closely, gradually drew ahead, and ran home two seconds ahead of the former.

Tho finishing limes were:—Thelma. 2h 4Sm -IDs; loningi. 2li 49m 203: Nga Toa. 2h 50m: Aviki, 2h 50m 2s: Prize, 2h 51m 40s: Rawene, 2h 52m 31s; Moana, 2h 57m 30s; Ida. 3h 5m 203: Heartsease. 3h 8m 335. Result.—Heartsease, 1; Ida, 2: Prize, 3. THE KEEL YACHTS. WINNER OF SECOND CLASS. B Class, Second Class Yachts. First Prize, £10; second prize, £5 ss: third prize, trophy valued at £2 2s. presented by Donaghy Ropo and Twin© Co.—Only five boats put. in an appearance in the second class for vachts, and shortly before tho start, Kotiri, standing in too close to the flagship. carried away her mainsail, and returned to her moorings. Of the others, Mahaki crossed the line first, and then came Lady Wilnia, Rangi and Windward. On the run down the hqrbour Lady Wilnia and Windward ppssed Mahaki, and. before the channel was reached, Mahaki also had to give place to Rangi. Returning to the harbour again, Lady Wilma was in tho lead, with Rangi and Windward following in that order. Making tho turn at the eastern deflector mark, the positions were unchanged, but. shortly before reaching Orakei, Windward caught and passed Rangi. Lady Wilma increased her lead in the second round. The finishing times were:—Lady \\ilma, 3h 16m 355; Windward. 3h 20ni 375; Rangi, 3h 31m 4Ss; Mahaki, 3h 3Sm 19s. Result.—Windward, I; Lady Wilma, 2. C Class. Third Class Yachts. First prizo ; £10: second prize, Geo. Court and Sons' trophy, Xo ss; third prize, £2.—The C class boats were sent away at 10.30 a.m., Owhanga crossing the line first, closely followed by Janet, Kotuku and Queenie. Queenio was the smartest out with her spinnaker, and took tho lead. Sho was still in charge passing St. Helicrs Wharf, with Gloriana, lona, and Janet running almost together close astern of tho leader. Queenie improved her position on the lead out to the channel mark, and also on the beat back again. At tho eastern tide deflector mark, on the completion of the first round, the order of tho boats rounding was Queenie, lona. Kotuku. Owhanga and Scout. The finishing times were:—Queenie, lh 50m 495; lona, 2h 14in; Owhango, 21i 18m 15s; Kotuku, 2h 39m 5Ss; Scout, 2h 20m 403; Gloriana, 2h 33m 10s; Janet. 2h 42m 7s: Alexa, 2h 44m 51s. Result:—Queenie, 1; Owhango. 2; lona. 3. Star Class. First prize, £2.—Only three boats started in this race, the order across tho line being June, Moa, and Maid Marion. After the initial stages Moa took tho lead, which sho maintained until tho finish.

The finishing times were: —Moa, 3h 2m 14s June, 3h 2m 18s. Result:—iloa. 1; June, 2.

E and 0 Classes. Fourth-class Yachts.— First prize, i'B; second prize, £3; third prize, trophy presented by Morris, Black and Matheson, Limited. Pandora wa3 the smartest across the line in the race for E and 0 class boats, and she was followed at a little distance by Dolphin, Naiad and Mahoe. Tho other boats were close astern of the latter. Aurora. Mirage, Vanora and Maybelle following in that order. There was very little between the boats in the run down to the Bastion beacon and Mirage passed all except Pandora. The finishing times were: —Pandora, 2h 47m 375; Mirage, 2k 51m 16s; Maybelle, 2h 54m 255; Naiad, 3h 2m ss; Mahoe, 3h 3m 21s; Dolphin, 3h 4m 245; Aurora, 3k 8m 17s. Result.—-Dolphin, 1; Naiad, 2; Pandora, 3.

CENTREBOARD BOATS. BEST RACE OF THE DAY. H and I Classes, Mullet Boats, not over 211 ft.; first prize, i'S; second prize, .£:!: third prize, trophy presented by A. Foster and Company.—The race for H and 1 class mullet boats provided the best, start of the day, all the competitors getting a way very smartly. Awatere was first across the line closely followed by Why Mot. Spray and Omatere. Celox. Starlight and Calypso were only seconds behind. On the run flown to the Bastion Beacon (here was very hltlo between the bouts, which were all racing practically abreast. Rounding North Head Omatere had u short lead from Starloch and Starlight. On the beat up from iho Bastion, Omatere was overhauled by Slnriight. Starloeh and Spray, (he boats passing tho eastern tide deflector in that order. Then ciinio Celox, Awatere and Why Not. On (he final beat up (he channel Omatere was in (he lead from Starloeh, with Celox, Spray and Starlight in closo pursuit. Starlight sailed well on the wind and gradually drew ahead to lead tho way to tho line. . The finishing times were; —Starlight. 2h siim 10s: Omatere. 3h 7m 3s: Celox. 3h 8m :is; Spray, 3h 12s; Starloeh, 3h 13m 10s; Awatere, 3h 10m 2Ss: Why Not, 3h 20m 18s. Result.—Why Not, 1; Spray, 2; Starlight. 3.

Rainger.—Mario wan first ncroM the stinting in the race for L class mullet boats and was closely followed by Rakoa, with Venus, Waima. Valeria and Mftlua a liitle distance behind. Then camo Mowat. Otiia nnd Vnruna. On the run down the harbour Rakoa passed Mario and maintained her lend throughout. The finishing times were: - Rakoa, 2h 27m Marie, 2h C9rn fis: Valeria, 2h 31m 455: Venus, 2h 32m 475; Vnruna, 2h 30m 41s: Otini, 2h 40m fits; Doreen, 2h 43m sfis: 2h 4fim 41s; Mowai, 2h 40m 58s: Malua 2h »n m la; Waima. 3h 0m 7s. Class, Mullet Boats, not over 20ft.; first prize. XS : second prize, £2: third prize, trophy.—ln the N class race for 20-footers Mntanki was first across the line. Then camo Ngnwa. Ngaro and Wyoming, followed at a little distance by Wairere, Winifred and Lorna. Wairere and Winifred soon went nn to the lead and on the bent up the harhour to the finishing line the latter Kinfiually drew ahead, leading her rival home from Matariki and Ngaro.
