WORK FOR UNIVERSITY.
LAND UTILISATION METHODS. At a special meeting of the .Auckland University College Council, held yesterday, a letter was received from the professor of economics reporting that a grant of £'JOO per annum for two years had been made by tlyo council'of the Institute of Pacific J!dations for the purpose of research into land utilisation in New Zealand, - It was slated by (ho president, Sir Ueorge iowlds, that the project would comprise an investigation for 'the period of two years into the factors influencing the utilisation of land, and these would include natural conditions, supply of labour, transport and other similar influxes. ihey were topics which had been amy cursorily examined hitherto, and it ivas expected that much light would be ihrown on land experiments in New Zea'land. The result of the scheme would be to clarify several problems in New Zealand ■firming, and to indicate the probable sur- ( ilus-producing capacity of New Zealand 11 . future. 16 was also hoped that by linking the university with a research of fundamental importance, en:ouragement would be given to the con- . linuanco of such work in the future. The riethods of research to be adopted would hclude the collection and classification of lata, and surveys. .... It was resolved that the Auckland Uni- • fersity College should accept the trustee- ■ thip of /the-fund, and that the investiga.v/aon be carried out by the staff of the de- , tartment . ot economics at Auckland, to.,rV»ther with field investigators and stufor the appointment of v c , Qn duct the research were - "aiids of a sub-committee*
