STOCKS AND SHARES.

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE. THE WEEK OPENS QUIETLY. i __ The week opened to lifeless conditions on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday, when only a small volume of business was transacted. Tho market for Government investments was unchanged, but thero was more inquiry for local body debentures, issues paying 6 per cent, being chiefly sought. Tho demand for banks romained restricted. Offers for Commercials of Australia eased 6d to 225, but the shares wero moro firmly held with an increase in sellers' quotations from 23s to 23s 6d. Rights wore untaken at 2s 3d. A similar movement was registered by New South Wales, which were sought unchanged at £39 10s, while sellers moved up from £4O 15s to £4l. In insurance, South British, which had sale 6d easier at 59s 6d, were the only shares in request. In loan and agency there was little movement beyond a slight weakening of Goldsbrough-Morts, for which olfers eased 3d on Saturday's figure to 29s 9d. Sellers moved in sympathy from 31s 9d to 31s 6d. In coals the preference issue of Hikurangis was sought 7d dearer at 4s 7d, without attracting any response. Auckland Gas were a shade easier following the sale of (lie contributing issue at tho current price, 18s sd. In shipping, Devonport Steams were tho only shares in demand, and a deal was recorded 3d in advance of the pre-holiday level at 235. A buyer remained in the market at 22s 9d, but sellers withdrew.

Offers for breweries wero reinstated except in the case of New Zealands, which, after a few days' neglect, were sought 5s cheaper at 81s 9d, and wero quoted, at 83s 6d, compared with 88s on Saturday. Business in tho miscellaneous section was confined to a single transaction in Hill and Plummers, which made a currentprice sale at 21s 6d. There was little change in tho inquiry for other general investments, which continued to lack strength. In mining, Moanataiaris remained in favour with a slight easing in value.
