THE NEW SEASON'S TRADE.
RESULTS FOR SIX MONTHS.
MARKED INCREASE OF IMPORTS.
Since the calendar year comprises portions of two seasons, the 12 months ending June 30 are a most instructive basis for the examination of trade returns in relati.on to production. Normally, the returns for the first half of the production year, July to December, show imports in excess of - exports, the favourable balance being restored by a greater excess of exports in the second half, - Following is a summary of the returns for the July-December period of recent years:— • Julj'.-Dec. Exports. Imports. . Excess. 1923 . £14,884,786 £-22,481.976 £7,597,190 1924 19,051,713 25,883,200 6,831,487 1923 16,864,013 27,412,122 10,578,090 1920 .. 15,802,741 25,171,933 ' 9.3G9.242 1927 . . 17,904.012 22.582,242 4,678,230 1928 .. 18,473,209 23,970,566 5,497,357 1929 .. 17,807,522 26,660,534 8,853,012
The valuation of exports for the latest period shows a contraction of £665,687, while imports have increased by £2,689,968 —the latter being the highest total for the period since 1925. Normally, imports predominate in the first five months of the season, followed by six months with exports greater thanimports, and a further excess of imports in the last month. This year, the first five, months, July to November, resulted in ar\ excess of imports of £9,045,000, which -was considerably larger than in either of the two preceding years. The turn came in December with a small excess of exports, £191,931.
