TWO POSITIONS FILLED.

The Public Service Commissioner has appointed Mr. G. E. Breeze, A.M.I.M.E. and registered engineer, to the positions of chief inspector of machinery and chief surveyor of ships. . ~ > -. . Mr. Breeze served his apprenticeship of marine engineering with the Dunedin Engineering Company, and was subsequently at sea as an enginoer. For some time he worked in Paisley, Scotland, with Messrs. Bow and McLachlan, marine engineers, and with Laird and' Company, now CammellLaird, of Birkenhead. For three years ho was leading draughtsman at the steel rolling .mills of the English McKenna Process Company, Birkenhead, when ,• hp was engaged in designing and preparing ; working drawings. : Subsequently he served as draughtsman with the Auckland Electric Tramway Company, and at Price's engineering works, Thames. He'joined the Marine Department as office engineer in 1907, and has : been continuously so'employed since. '• Mr. Breeze was responsible for the preparation of regulations and tables for the safe working loads for fibre ropes, wire ropes and chains used in connection witii the working of ship's cargoes. This production has aroused very wide interest abroad, arid is the first comprehensive effort made to ensure the safety of those concerned, in working ship cargo. He' also prepared the plans and specifications for the new lighthouse steamer which is now under way in the yards of Hawthorne, Leslie arid Company. ' , ' The Public Service Commissioner has also appointed Mr. Robert McKinnon to the position of chief examiner of engineers. 1 • ' '

Mr. McKinnon holds the certificate 1 of extra first marine engineer, l and also ft certificate' as a motor engineer. He had his early training in Scotland, with Messrs. Davis : and Primrose, of Leith, and with Messrs. Brown Brothers and Company, Rosebank Iron Works, Edinburgh. For some time prior to coming .to New Zealand he r„cted as examiner of motor vessels.
