PAEROA, Sunday.
As Iho result of being struck by a tfain to-day a middle-aged Indian, Basant Singh, employed as a farm labourer by Mr. G. Murdoch, of Hikutaia, died in a private hospital at Paeroa. The accident occurred on • the railway lino between Paeroa and Te Aroha. The man attended the trotting meeting at Te Aroha yesterday and missecl the train to Hikutaia. He was walking along the line near Waitoki when he was struqk, about 9 a.m.,'by a special train from' Frankton to Tauranga. The train was stopped and the injured man taken to Paeroa. where he was attended by Dr. G. T. Smith and admitted to a private hospital. Ho died shortly after admission. FATALITY AT CROSSING. GIRL STRUCK BY EXPRESS.: [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. Through being struck by the Parnassus express at the Alliance Street railway crqssing yesterday afternoon Mary Isabel Clarke, aged 12, was killed instantly,. The accident occurred at 5.10 p.m. No witnesses of the occurrence have yet been discovered, and it is not known how it happened that the girl failed to observe the approach of the train. The crossing is not dangerous for pedestrians.
