COMMENTS' ON- THE EVENTS. iTWO NEW RECORDS MADE. . /-' oTAGO BOY'S FINE STYLE. 'X-Bl' TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] GREYMOUTH, Sunday. The weather was wretched for the continuation of New Zealand amateur swimming championships last evening. Two more records were lowered, one by G. liridson in tho half rnile championship and the other by R. Geddes in the junior boys' breaststroke. In the first event, the 75yds junior boys' breaststroke championship, the junior free style title holder, -R. Geddes (Otago), was an easy winner from his team mates W. Jarvis and C. Jilliott, in 59 2-ss, which reduced his previous record by 1 2-ss. Geddes has a beautiful style and is easily the best allround swimmer/for his age in the Dominion. Giving a masterly - exhibition of the backstroke L. Moorhouse was never lieaded in the ISOVds backstroke championship. His time, Irn 525, was an improvement of two seconds on his existing recoj'd. However, in winning the Ganterbuiy title about a fortnight ago Moorhouse recorded lm 49 2-ss, but this timo has yet to receive official recognition. The champion's saltwater record is lm 52 1-s*. The 220 yds ladies' championship was but a repetition of the 440 yds event for Miss Kathleen, Miller, except for one .stage when she' was challenged by Miss .Natalie Stratton (Wanganui) was never .in any danger of losing her title. Miss Miller's time. 2m 58s, was only fair, . being three seconds above standard". After ft season's absence from the sport Miss M. Je.on (Otago) is showing a return to her best form of a few seasons ago. In finishing second this evening she registered the good time of 3rn 2s. Both the 'Auckland girls, Misses Farquhar and Robertson, swam up to their Auckland championship form but were beaten by better swimmers on the evening. Bridson again'had matters all his own way in the 880 yds championship in which he set a new record of 11m 39 3-ss, compared with S. P. Lindsay's 11m 44 3-ss. '•Kight' from the start he left the other n, P°titors and increasing his advantage a P he finally emerged victor by from Stokes ( Canterbury). kStliiß -have no difficulty in ani' • tAVO remaining distance events,

The Auckland water polo team had a busy day, being called upon to play one match in the afternoon and another in the evening. The first, against Wellington, was won by two goals (Enwright and .liridson) to one. There was little to choose between the merits of any of the Auckland players, the whole team combining well throughout. In the final of the championship last season Wellington won by 7 goals to 2. In the second match yesterday Auckland met a weak side, West Coast, and had no difficulty in winning by 4 goals to 1. The 100 yds intermediate girls' championship which was won by the Otago girl, M. Mathieson, was noteworthy for tho hard luck of the Auckland girl, S. Brown. After having gone to the front at the half-way mark she swallowed water while negotiating the second turn. In spite of tho fact that she was scarcely able to breathe she continued for another 20yds but then had to retire. She was then leading by about two yards and seemed to have victory within her grasp. Although handicapped by an injury to his foot which caused him to retire at Ihe oOOyds mark tho Auckland boy, E. Thomas, could not have gained a place even had ho finished. Ho would bo acting wisely if ho reserved himself for the sprints. McConvillo (Canterbury), who won in 6m 6 3-ss, or 5 3-5s slower than ii. Gowan's record, has an attractive stylo and bids fair to make his name well known in the swimming world. • v THE KELLERMAN CUP. WIN FOR J. ENWRIGHT. RACE IN LAKE BRUNNER. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] GREYMOUTH, Sunday. The race for the Kellerman Cup was held over a three mile course on Lake Brunner to-day. There was a large number of spectators. Results were J. Enright (Auckland), .. .. 1 Claridge (Wellington) .. .. «. 2 Bailey (Otago) 3 Also Started.—Mulloy, Armstrong, Hestieaux (West Coast), Connor (Canterbury). Time, lh 22m 7s. Claridge secured the fastest time, lm 21 4-ss. He finished 3m behind the winner and 25s ahead of Bailey. The others did not complete the course. AUSTRALIAN TITLES. TWO MELBOURNE EVENTS. (Received January 26, 11.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Jan. 26. In the swimming championships of Australia Inst evening results were:— Men's 440 yards.— R. Grier (Queensland), holder, 1; Christie (New South Wales), 2; Walter (Victoria), 3. Grier won all the way and beat Christie by two and a-half yards. Time, 5m 30s.
