BIRTH OF WILDEBEEST.
ADDITION TO THE ZOO.
FAST DISAPPEARING SPECIES.
A blue wildebeest is the latest addition to the Auckland Zoo by natural increase. The birth occurred early yesterday morning.
The wildebeest is one of the rarest, and probably the most savage, of the African antelopes, and the species is greatly sought after by spoilsmen, as the heads make fine trophies of the chase. A bull and two cows were imported to the zoo in 1925, and oye of the cows gave birth to a bull calf, which is now about 18 months old. Unfortunately, the mother lushed a fence and broke her neck. The wildebeest is an interesting addition to the zoo. as the species is fast disappearing in South Africa. Even rarer is the white-tailed gnu, of which there are two female exhibits at. the zoo. Efforts are being made to secure a male, and the authorities are hopeful that tha quest will bo successful.
