STOCKS AND SHARES.

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE.

MOANATAIARIS RISE AGAIN. Active trading in Moanataiari mining shares at sharply appreciated values was the outstanding feature of business on tho Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. In other respects the market was dull on weakened inquiry.

The banking section was particularly affected, and with a further withdrawal of buyers, selling pressure became evident in quotations for all the listed banks except Queensland Nationals. Commercials of Australia dropped lower and had salo 4£d cheaper at 23s 3d, and then declined further with two more transactions at 235. Offers were renewed at 22s lOd, a fall of 8d on the previous day. Sellers were prepared to take Sd less at 235. Rights in the new issue also reflected the general trend, and were done twice 6d lower at 2s. New South Wales eased 2s 6d, changing hands at £4O 12s 6d. More were sought at £4O. in insurance a single deal in South British 6d lower at 60s satisfied the demand, the only buyer in the section later withdrawing.

Inquiry remained restricted in the loan and agency section. Tho only business done was in the preference issue of Newton Kings, which made a current-price sale at lis 6d. In gas Aucklands remained in favour, and both issues sold unchanged at 24s lOd and 18s 5d respectively. in other sections there was some inquiry for timbers and breweries, but the demand in miscellaneous was weaker.

in mining spirited bidding took place for Moanataiaris. During the day the fully-paid issue rose from tho current price, Is 9d, to 2s 6d, five sales being recorded at those and intermediate levels. The 2s 4d paid issue appreciated 7d with a salo at Is 9d, and another deal was made with the Is 6d paid issue, which was done 4d better at Is 6d. The market closed firm. Interest in other mining investments was limited. Mount Lyells sold at 355, a fall of 2s 6d on the last local sale, and Is 3d on Christchurch levels. CLOSING QUOTATIONS.
