EASTER BANK HOLIDAYS.
A BUSINESS PROBLEM.
ONE MAY BE DELETED.
Easter this year is so late as to fall immediately before St. George s Day and Anzac Day, both of which are statutory bank holidays. If all the usual holidays are observed this will mean that in eight consecutive days the banks will be •open on one day only. Good Friday falls on April 18, and St. George's Day and Anzac Day fall on Wednesday and Friday of Easter Week respectively. The Banking Act, 1908, and its amendments, specify 13 statutory bank holidays in the year, including Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday. Easter Tuesday is usually observed, but ranks as a "special" holiday, for which permission must be obtained annually from the Minister of Finance.
No notification has been received by the Auckland banks as to what will be done by tho Associated Banks. It is at least possible that to meet the convenience of business people Easter Tuesday will be made a working day this year. In that event tho banks will be open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning of Easter Week.
