OCEAN YACHT RACE.
FIRST HEAT AT SYDNEY. WIN FOR NEW SOUTH WALES. (Received January 17, 12.35 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 16. The first heat of the yacht race for the Sayonara Cup was sailed to-day. The competing yachts were Vanessa (New South Wales), the holder of the trophy, and Acrospire IV. (Victoria), the challenger. The latter is a new yacht and was built specially for the race. The course was one of ten miles out to sea and back. A strong southeasterly' wind and rough seas tested the competing vessels to the utpiost. Vanessa, with a handicap of 9 minutes 14 seconds, won easily.
