AUCKLAND CITY RATES.
PAYMENTS SHOW INCREASE,
THE 10 PER CENT. PENALTY.
Rate payments received at the Auckland City treasurer's office up to last evening are approximately £95,000, or 16 per cent, greater ill total than those for the corresponding period of last year. The increase has been maintained ' each month since the rates were struck. More ratepayers than formerly are availing themselves of the right to pay their rates by instalments. The general buoyancy of the receipts may be taken as a healthy sign of the times.
A surcharge of 10 per cent, is levied on all rates unpaid six months and 14 day# after the date of issue of the notices. This period expired on Wednesday in respect of the first batch of notices sent out from the office.
