HOKIANGA COUNTY NEEDS.

BETTER TRAFFIC ROUTES. GOVERNMENT HELP SOUGHT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER.] RAWENE, Thursday. Roads in the Hokianga county were inspected by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. E. A. Ransom, to-day, aftQr leaving Kaitaia and proceeding through Herekino to Broadwood. At Broadwood, where a stop was made for lunch, the Minister agreed to proposals for work to proceed on tho Pukemiro-Humanga roads in anticipation of the subsidy on the loans being available .after March 31. From Broadwood tho party proceeded south through Runaruna to To Ivaraka whence it proceeded by launch to Kohukohu. » A request for the coastal end of the new west coast road to be proceeded with was made by Mr. R. Holland at Whakarapa, on behalf of Maori settlers, who wore said to bo sending creaip 15 miles on packhorscs. An offer of labour on the basis of pound for pound subsidy was made. Tho Minister accepted this proposal, saying ho would help tho natives if they were willing to help themselves. Further referonco to the west coast road was made at Kohukohu. The need for construction of a ramp for tho lunding and embarkation of motor vehicles at Ivydale, on the opposite shore to Kohukohu, was made. Mr. Ransom said lie was not yet sufficiently familiar with the district and tho details of the proposal to enable him to make a decision, but he would have tho required information obtained and would consult with the Minister of Marine, whose department appeared also to be concerned.

Tho Minister and his party were the guests of the Kohukohu Chamber of Commerce at dinner-

At RaweiiQ this evening 'Mr. Ransom was met by the Hokianga County Council and several deputations of settlers. A list of road works for which grants or subsidies wore desired was submitted. Tho total expenditure proposQd was £7241, of which tho Government was asked to provide £1589 in free grants and £2826 in subsidies. Tho Minister promised consideration of tho matters involved.
