SAFETY OF BRIDGE.

PROTECTIVE WEIR DAMAGED.

NEW PLYMOUTH HIGHWAY.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT]

NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday

Extensive damage lias been done to Waiwakaiho River weir at Fitzroy by tho recent floods. The Public Works engineers have visited New Plymouth and conferred with the engineers of the Borough Council arid the Taranakr County Council. Although it is not possible yet to obtain a. definite estimate of the cost of reconstruction, it will be a fairly expensive matter. The borough engineer, Mr. C. Clarke, said the weir was in a state of collapse. The trouble was caused by the erosion of shingle. A large amount of shingle had been carried from above and below the .weir, lowering the bed of the river. The weir was built to protect tho bridge. It was unlikely that tho bridge would be endangered, however, before the reconstruction of the weir, which would be undertaken during tho coming summer. - The bridge carries the main traffic north from New Plymouth.
