DROWNED IN THE SURF.
EFFORTS AT RESCUE.
PRAISE FROM THE CORONER.
[BT TELEGRAPH, —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Friday.
A verdict of accidental death was returned at the inquest on Robert James Watson, aged 23, who lost his life at Day's Bay on Saturday. The coroner said he thought Mr. Guilfoyle was to be commended on the action he took to save the life of his comrade, although his efforts were unavailing.
A bathing fatality occurred at Day's Bay at about four o'clock last Saturday afternoon, when Mr. James Watson lost his life. While bathing in company with several companions Mr. Watson got into difficulties in the heavy surf. His plight was soon noticed, and his friends went to his assistance. They had almost reached the shore when a large wave caused them to release their hold on the drowning man and he was carried away. Dragging operations were commenced immediately, and after a short time the body was found. Artificial respiration was applied without.avail.
