Wo may niako all tho allow'anco wo wish for tho shortcomings of his plays —their wordiness, their excessively argumentative quality, their lack of strong, absorbing story, tneir sometimes desperately ' topical character, their almost ontiro innocence of strong, objective characterisation—yet (ho fact remains that they are the absorbing plays and that they aro being performed nil over the world. Indeed. . . in somo retpecls tho bulk of his plays must bo admitted to constitute the greatest achievement in the history of tho English drama sinco Shakespere's time."
