LATE SIR C. SKERRETT.

UNVEILING OF PORTRAIT. WHERE TRIUMPHS WERE WON. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Friday. A portrait in oils of the late Sir Charles Skerrett, former Chief Justice of New Zealand, was unveiled by the Chief Jus 1 tice, the Hon. M. Myers, in the Supremo Court to-day. There were present on the Bench with the Chief Justice Mr. ; Justice Ostler and Mr. Justice Blair, and in the body of tho Court there was a.large attendance of the Bar, the stipendiary magistrates of Wellington, and others. Mr. A. Gray, K.C., said the ceremony had been made possible by the generosity of Sir Charles Skerrett's sisters and his brother, who desired that there should be some enduring memorial of the late Chief Justice which would always. serve, as a reminder of him to those with whom he was associated. They accordingly had had his portrait painted, and had presented it to the New Zealand Law Society. "The picture now hangs upon the wall of this chamber, where, with Your Honor's approval, it has been placed among the portraits of other distinguished Judges who have passed away," said Mr. Gray. "It seems fitting\that it should lie placed in this chamber which was the scene of so much of Sir Charles Skerrett s life work, and where so much of his fame was created and established. The New Zealand Law Society acknowledges a debt of gratitude to the Misses Skerrett and their brother for'their generosity." The Chief Justice, the Hon. M. Myers, said he had great pleasure, with the other Judges, in giving approval to the Law Society to have ihe portrait of the. late Sir Charles Skerrett hung in that, chamber, which was both the Supreme Court of the Wellington district, and the Court, of Appeal room for New Zealand. It was in that room that most of' the triumphs of the late Sir Charts Skerrett were won. His Honor then unveiled the portrait, and the Court adjourned for half an hour.
