"BOOKMAKING MUST STOP."
OPERATIONS AT MARTON. HEAVIER FINES IN FUTURE. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] MARTON, Saturday. "There has been a good deal of controversy in Marlon lately as to why we arrest some bookmakers and let others alone," remarked Constable Thompson, in Court to-day, when Alfred Kayc was charged with using premises in Harris Street as a common gaming house. "This is the third man we have brought before the Court in the last month, and I say emphatically we are out to stop tho practice." Kaye pleaded guilty, stating that lie was not a bookmaker by occupation, but just did " a bit of it as a hobby." Constable Thompson, in explaining the facts of tho case, said Kayo was a hardworking man and only bet in a small way. But on the other hand, he had not accepted the warning which two previous cases provided. The constable said. he thought tho fine should bo increased. The Bench said that with all due respect to tho suggestion of the police it had been decided to impose a fine of £5, but added: "We would like it to bo made known that the maximum penalty on this charge is £IOO or three months' imprisonment, and if we are called upon to deal with 'similar cases in the future we will seriously consider heavy penalties. Marlon 13 a quiet liltlo town, but bookmaking cropped up lately and it must stop. 'J'ho police were to be commendod for cleaning up the town, and they could depend on the co-operation of the Bench.
