CHAPLAIN AT PRISON.
WORK OF REV. E. C. BUDD.
MEMORIAL SERVICE HELD. A deeply-impressive service, a memorial to tho Rev. E. C. Budd, for 28 years the Anglican prison chaplain in Auckland, was conducted in tho Mount Eden prison yesterday by the Rev. Charles Chandler, who succeeded Mr. Budd as prison chaplain in 1927. There was an attendance of over 200 men and women prisoners.
Speaking from the text, "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to bo ashamed," 11. Timothy, ii., 15), Mr. Chandler referred to Mr. Budd's 28 years of service as prison chaplain and chaplain at the mental and general hospitals. Mr. Chandler stressed the point that tho. big work of the Church was not done by tho great preachers, but by the steady, plodding, unobtrusive souls, who quietly, by personal contact, influenced the lives of others. Mr. Budd might be called a brother of consolation, in that the whole of his ministerial life was spent in bringing consolation to his less fortunate brothren.
While there might be no tablets of brass or stone erected to Mr. Budd, a (ar better memorial would be provided by his work in transforming the lives of men and bringing ithem from darkness into light. His memory would be graven not on stone, but on the hearts of men, for he had been iv great spiritual help to many hundreds in prison. As appropriate to Mr. Budd's work Mr. Chandler quoted the following passago from the 25th chapter of Matthew:—"l was an hungered and ye gave mo meat; I was thirsty and ye gave me drink; I was sick and ye visited me; 1 was in prison and yo came unto me." During the service the hymns, "Nearer, My God, to Thee" and "Now tho Labourer's Task is O'er" were sung. A minute's silence was observed at the ..conclusion of tho service in memory of Mr. Budd. „A communion service, attended by 16, was later held. Mr. Chandler is shortly leaving for Sydney to start a social crusade and his farewell service at tho prison will be held on December 15.
