[by telegraph.—press association.s WELLINGTON, Friday. * A man's leap for life from a burning building was witnessed this afternoon when fire broke out at the Arahiwi Pri! vate Hotel, in Abel Smith Street. *

The fire had a fairly strong hold when discovered, and the firemen were faced * with a difficult task. The flames spread so rapidly that an attempt to get in touch " with a- boarder on the first floor was out of the question. The man had to jump to the ground, a distance of about 25ft He sustained injuries which necessitated his removal to the hospital.

The building, which is of 22 rocms r was very severely damaged. The proprietress is Mrs. E. M. Pine.
