SUPPORTS FOR PLANTS.

CARE OF TOMATOES.

Attend to the staking of peas and other plants needing supports. In cases where branches or other suitable rnatorials are not obtainable, a few stout stakes and string stretched along each side of the rows will give the support required. Tomatoes, ■ however, require to be strongly supported to either stakes or trellis to support the weight of fruit when in full bearing. These are now making rapid growth, and will need to be frequently looked over and have all surplus laterals kept removed. If they have not been' planted on too rich ground, and are grown on the simple stem system, the first bunch of fruit should form not more than 6iri. or 7in. from the ground, and at the same distances apart throughout the whole length of the stem. Grown in this way the plant will set and develop fruits more freely than when more leaders are allowed to grow. As soon as a few of the bunches of fruits have set, mulching the plants, and giving an occasional watering with liquid manure, will greatly assist in the development of the crop.
