BELLS OF ST. CLEMENT'S.
RECTOR AND - COMPLAINTS
■ The Rev. W. Pennington Biekford, Rector of St. Clement Danes, in the Strand. London, replied recently to thfi complaints of barristers working late and residents* that the tarrious bells made a nuisance of themselves. " Sometimes," admitted ths rector, our bells must be a nuisanpe, and I try-to keep the ringing down to a minimum. TJ.ic public does not realise that bell-ringing is an art,' and that a ' peal ' takes three and a-half hours to complete. St. Clement Danes is the headquarters of five guilds of ringers,, and the long rinsings arc necessary to keep the guilds going. " Evening ' peals ' are arranged only once a month, sometimes only once in three months.' When we liave a peal on Saturday afternoon I put a notice on the church door, warning local residents that the bells will be rung.' They can "then get out of the way if thay 'want to. " I always stop the bells in cases of sickness, and even for a lecture, so I do not see that the Temple really has niuch to complain about." ■
