HARBOUR BRIDGE SCHEME.

ATTITUDE OF TAKAPUNA*

EVIDENCE FOR COMMISSION.

The attitude to be adopted by the borough of Takapuna before the Harbour Bridge Commission was discussed at a special meeting of the Borough Council last evening. The Mayor, Mr. J. W.Williamson, presided.

The Mayor suggested that there should • be a round-table discussion to decide what evidence the council should submit to the commission. His view was that he and the borough engineer, Mr. A. Slinger, should officially represent the council before the commission, and submit statistical information as to the growth of the borough and its present position.

After giving consideration to possible sites for the bridge, general agivem?nfc was arrived at that the council should ask for a bridge crossing from the vicinity of Beaumont Street on the Auckland side of the harbour, to as near as engineering possibilities will admit to the middle of Shoal Bay, on the northern side, and not further west than Northcots Point. It was decided to recommend to the Bridge Association the' advisability of holding a conference with representatives of the Harbour Board prior to the resumption of the commission's sittings, with a view to arriving at points of common concern to the two interests.

As the commission requires first to have evidence proving the necessity for the bridge, it was agreed that the Mayor should submit statistics prepared by the town clerk as to the population and growth of the borough and the extent of tho traffic through it, as established by tally. The borough engineer will be & witness and any councillor will be free to offer his personal view.

Seeing that the bridgo will form a link" in the main northern highway, it was agreed that the official evidence should claim that the Government should jbear at least half the cost of construction.
