TRAMS TO AVONDALE.
Sir,—ln the article in Wednesday's Herald on "Trams to Avondale," there are some assertions which require comment. The deputation which waited on the Transport Board presented a petition signed by allegedly 1590 residents of Mount Albert and Avondale. As far as . Avondale goes, many of the signatories are constant travellers by the motorbuses. and a fair proportion irresponsible juveniles. Mr. Tait, who presented the petition, was asked by Mr. Coylo if it was a fact that the people of Avondale, preferred trams to either trains or buses. His reply was: Absolutely. Now, only a few years ago Mr. Tait was one of deputation that waited on the Railway Department asking for a more frequent tram service to Avondale, his contention. \ being that more tickets were issued from Avondale than from any other suburban station in Auckland. Does this prove Mr. Tait's reply? As far as Avondale transport facilities go, we have a very efficient bus service. Whether it pays or not, the public think it does, or .should do, judging by the number of passengeis carried The bus service caters veiy satisfactorily for the , greater part of Avondale, and I venture to assert that if a petition was taken round asking for the ■ continuance of our admirable bus service, which at the present time cannot be improved upon, an equally large number of signatures could be obtained, and the Transport Boaid would find that the ; majority of Avondale residents are quite satisfied with the motor-bus.
