SHIP'S COOK DESERTS.
ORDERED TO PAY COSTS.
A charge of unlawfully absenting himself from the steamer Rnranga was preferred Hga-nst Philip William Chilman, A aged 3b, a cook, in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M. A representative of the Shaw, Savill and .Albion Company said accused had signed on at Glasgow for the round trip. ,He deserted the steamer at Auckland and the company had been put to considerable expense in engaging another cook. Accused said he left New Zealand on another vessel of the, company's line and •i; ; ,he considered he had a right to be returned to New Zealand. Accused was convicted and ordered to ' 1 lwo c ' a y s ' pay and to pay the costs « the prosecution, £2 10s.
