OFFENCE BY SALESMAN.

VALUELESS CHEQUE ISSUED.

REMAND FOR SENTENCE.

" I think the cheque-book has been a temptation to this young man," said StaffCaptain Holmes, of the Salvation Army, in the Police Court yesterday, when Earl John Conrad Craven, aged 24, a salesman (Mr. Smyth), was charged with obtaining £3 by means of a valueless cheque.

Chief-Detective Hammond said accused had presented valueless cheques at two city hotels and had been arrested later at Dargaville. He had been before the Court previously on a charge of false pretences. Accused had had a banking account, but he knew the state of it prior to issuing the cheques. Mr. Smyth said accused had previously issued cheques which were not met when first presented, but which had been covered subsequently. He had written to the bank asking how his account stood and in the meantime he had issued a cheque, taking I,he risk that there was sufficient money in his account to meet it. Counsel added that accused had a steady position with a cutlery firm.

Replying to the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, accused said lie canvassed from door to door.

" That is a legitimate occupation," said Mr. Smyth. Tha magistrate said he was only too well aware of it, adding that he wished it were not so.

The probation officer. Mr. W. J. Campbell, said accused was unknown to him, bub he would obtain details from Wellington as to his previous offence. Pending a report from the probation officer, accused was romanded for sentence until next Thursday.
