FUNDS FOR SCHOOLS.

INSUFFICIENT ALLOWANCE. DIFFICULTY AT OTOROHANGA. [BY TELEGRAPn. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] OTOROHANGA, Wednesday. The finances of the Otorohanga District High School Committee were discussed at a meeting of householders on Monday. Mr. F. rhillips, chairman of the Town Board, presided. Mr. W. J. Bowyor, chairman of the School Committee, explained that the capitation allowance of £137 was insufficient to cover the expenses in connection with the Otorohanga and Te Rau Mauku schools by about £2O a year. The Education Board in tliQ past had made several special grants, but when forwarding £lO recently had intimated that that amount was final, and in future tho allowance must not bo exceeded except at the personal expense of committee members. Tho board had urged on tho department that tho capitation allowance for tho larger district high schools was inadequate, and should be increased, but tho Minister of Education held out no hope that anything could bo done this year. . In a final letter the committeo bad pointed out that it had raised £167 this year by local contributions, and could not further appeal to the public. Failing assistance tho committeo must reluctantly resign. On tho motion of Mr. A. B. Mossman, seconded by Mr. 11. W. Atkinson, it was decided to express entiro confidence in the school committee; to regard tho request for an increase of the allowance or an extra grant yearly as reasonable; to urgo tho board to accede to the committee's request; and wliilo supporting tho committee request it to refrain from resigning unreservedly until tho Auckland Board had been communicated with, in order 1.0 ascertain finally whether or not tho committee will be granted the funds required to carry on. It was decided to forward a copy of tho resolution to Mr. W. .T. Broadfoot, M.P.
