GOATS FOR FARMERS.
GENERAL UTILITY PURPOSES. AN UNFAVOURABLE OPINION. [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] TAURANGA, Wednesday. Replying to representations for the encouragement of goat farming in the Dominion, with tho primary object of combating tho growth of blackberry, Dr. J. Lyons, director of tho Live Stock Division of tho Department of Agriculture, states that the department and its officers have always kept this method of blackberry control steadily in view, and have boon fully alive to the advantages derived by it in many instances. On (ho question of goats being used for utility purposes in the Dominion, Dr. Lyons stated that he did not think the farmers in New Zealand had yet reached the stago where they wero looking to this class of work as a source of profit. Further, seeing that tho dairy owners wero not able to procure sufficient labour to get the cows milked by hand, it would not be reasonable to suppose that they could do so for goafs. lie considered that 011 account of the high cost of labour itwould lie found that all tho profits would go in wages. With reference to the production of mohair from Angora goats, Dr. Lyons said this had been tried in New Zealand, but so far had proved a failure.
