SURPLUS NATIVE LAND.

AREAS NEAR OPOTIKI, SALE TO STATE ADVISED. [BT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OPOTIKI. Wednesday.

The Minister for Native Affairs, Sir Apirana Ngata, has been holding meetings of natives at Omarumutu, Torere and Maraenui, explaining to them his plans for the consolidation of native lands. He has advised at all the meetings that natives should sell all their unwanted land to the Government at the Government valuation.

If this is done, and the Government is willing to buy, the Minister will make a deal with the Opotiki County Council and pay up back rates. It appears that there are, roughly, 45,000 acres of unwanted lands near Opotiki, the Government valuation of which is Is an acre. If the Government will, buy at this figure then the natives will pay over to the County Council £2OOO. Committees have been set up in each settlement to seriously consider the question of consolidation and also whether advantage can be taken of the new Act under which natives can borrow money for improving their present holdings, which, in most cases, are capable of great improvement if a little capital is available. Mr. G. Shalfoon has been appointed Government nominee on the. Opotiki committee.
