DEATH AT 103 YEARS.

OLD SAILOR'S CAREER,

SHIPWRECKED' MANY TIMES.

QUEEN VICTORIA'S CORONATION,

[B2 TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Monday.

An old sailor and waterside worker, Mr. George Ryan, died to-day at the age of 103 years at St. Joseph's Home for Incurables, Wellington.

Mr. Ryan was born in Soufh Africa, his mother being a Boer and his father an Irishman. When quite young he went to sea as a cabin boy and spent most of his life on the sea. He was shipwrecked several times and was once cast away on a desert island for six weeks or more, having to live as best he could on birds' eggs and shellfish. He remembered being in London when Queen Victoria was crowned.

The old sailor had been in New Zealand off and on for 57 years, and had worked on the Wellington waterfront for some time. He went to St. Joseph's Home a little over three years ago. His only disability was old age, yet lie was quite hale and hearty for such an aged man. About a fortnight ago he took to his bed.
