FRUIT INDUSTRY.
PROSPECTS IN NELSON.
LAST SEASON'S SHIPMENTS.
The prospects for the coming apple season continue to be eminently satisfactory. There has been a long spell of fine weather and with the blossoming phenomena there should be a very heavy setting of fruit. All varieties have bloomed profusely.' Absence of rain has resulted in , practically no black spot infection so far, but the growers are taking no chances as regards this disease, and have kept rigidly to the customary spraying programme. Complaints continue to be made at the long delay in making payments on account of last season's export fruit. Many growers have had nothing beyond the advance at the time of shipping, and have the utmost difficulty in carrying on. The disastrous end-of-season shipments, too, have brought forth bitter criticism. It is stated that fruit sent from Nelson in April was not despatched from Wellington till June, and that it was then in such bad condition that the bills of lading were endorsed. On arrival in England portions of this fruit were condemned. The point is made that, seoing the fruit was in such a state before being shipped from Wellington, why was the expense,of sending it overseas incurred at all ?
Reporting to Mahana growers, Mr. J. Dicker, a member of the Federation Board of Directors,' stated that .the evidence placed before the committee in the House of Representatives inquiring into imported timber should ensure a favourable decision by Parliament toward fruitgrowers. Mr. Dicker also stated that every effort was being made by those concerned to provide facilities for loading as much as possible of next season's export fruit at Port Nelson. It was obvious that growers had everything to gam by direct loading —not only by a saving of freight, but also in handling. The Nelson Harbour Board, he said, was prepared to provide improved facilities, and tentative arrangements had been made for storing, if ncessary, up to 100,000 cases. ■
