IDEAL WEATHER PREVAILS

EIGHT CLUBS TAKE PART.

The 1929-30 yachting season in Auckland Vas officially opened on Saturday afternoon, v.- lien combined harbour and cruising races were held' under tlin auspices of the Auck land Yacht and Motor-Beat Association. Eiiiht cluus took part and although the boats made a good showing tho display of "white vines" d)d not compare favourably " with that of former opening days. Tho entries ■were smaller than those for last year, and tho only representative of tho big A class yachts was Nga Toa. The wejithei conditions wero ideal lor yachting, a wholesail breeze from the southwest prevailing earlier in the day, and afterI wards shifting to the south. Tho keel and , centreboard yachts and launches raced to i Islington Bay and tho 18ft. and under j classes competed over a harbour, course. | All events were started from tho tower on King's Wharf Dy the five-ltag system. Tho : keel yachts—classes A and B—were sent uway first at 2.20 p.m., the remainder of the l fleet following at eight-minute intervals. Several of the boaU raced in a number of clubs, and' succeeded in winning more than , ono prize. In the smaller classes tho most successful craft was tho new Y boat Lois, which accounted for seven first prizes. In the larger classes the '2lft. mullet boat Why Not, a-ou foui first and olio third prize. The officials in charge of the racing were; —Starter. Mr. C Mobberley; assistantstar'er, Mr. E. THE KEEL YACHTS. In tho race for classes A and B, Rangi wus .irst away, closely followed by Windward. Nga, Toa and Makahi. G oriana was one minute late. THE CENTREBOARD BOATS The race for 24 and 2G-footers brought out Why Not, Omatere, Starloch, Starlight and Spray. Why Not got a splendid start, crossing the line several le "Sths ahead of Omatere and the other tbiee boats: Starloch had some difficulty in ti> in- to carry a mi ail spinnaker well forward, but once she had it drawing it proved very useful. THE LAUNCH EVENTS The launches were started at 2.52 p.m.. and raced direct to Islington Bay. Kenya was waiting on the line for gunfire and got a splendid start. ajid then came liamona. 'My Girl. Nyna Katliryn R.. Ttaroona Jr., Yvonne. Lady Margaret and Renown. Lady Margaret fouied the markboat aiifl was disqualified My Girl soon took the lead and the finish was timed as follows:—My Girl. 3h 20m lis. SUCCESS OF MAWHITI. The race for class M brought out five competitors, including 'the new boat Manu, ■which * was makiDg her Srst appearance. From an excellent start Manu crossed the line just of Maratea. with Manene, ilawhiti aid Maroro following in that order. Maratea passed Manu and was still in tho lead on the beat from Sandspit to Resolution buoy. Just before reaching Resolution, however. Manene headed Martv tea. Mawhiti was third at this mark, Manu fourth and' Maroro last On the next leg to Kine's Wharf Maratea regained her position, rounding the mark-boat 153 uliead of Manene. which was ISs in front of Mawhiti. Manu followed 22s later. Maroro reported that she had fouled Mawhiti and save up. In the second round Manene took tho lead but later on Mawhiti. which had been sailing a good race, took command und led the fleet home. The finishing times were:—Mawhiti, 4h 25m 6s: Manene, 4b 27m ss; Maratea. 4h 27tu 50s: Manu, 4m 28m lis.

THE OPEN BOATS. Eight boats crossed the line in the race for class V. Surprise was first away and rest to hpr came Leveret. Mystic, Maranui and Wild Wave, with the others handy. Rita fouled the starting mark and was disqualified. Surprise continued her lead and on the completion of the first round wa3 2m 403 ahead of Wild Wave. Secret was 3m 37s further astern and then came Scud. Leveret. Desdemona and Mystic in that order. The finishing times were:—Surprise.

'4h 30m 395; Wild Wave. 4h 39m 345; Scud, 4h 43m 38s; Secret, 4h 43m 58s; Leveret, 4h 44m 355; Mystic, 4h 45m Ss; Desdemona, 4h 46m Rita, 4h 52m 2s. Maranui did not finish. .Just before the start of the race for the Star class, the new boat Maid Marion carried away her tiller and was towed to her mooring by .Tune, the race being declared off iA good start was effected in the race for class S. Sceptre crossed the line ahead of time and was ordered back. Swiftsure got away first and next to her came Huia 11., Aratu, Sceptre. Manu. Waitiri, Rangitira, and Bunguree. Aratu went into the lead early in the race and was never headed. Swiftsure was second boat at the King's Wharf in the first round, but in the final

round she was passed by both Manu and Rangitira. The finishing times were:— Aratu, 4h 54m 435; Narau, 4b 5Gm Gs; Rangitira. 4h 59m 525; Swiftsure, 5h lm 235: Sceptre, 5h .4m 225, Waitui, 5h 9m 335; Huia 11., sh) 24m 15s Bungaree did not £c:sh. There was a good muster of 14ft boats of all classes. Cupid led the fleet at gunfire and was closely followed by Rangi, Ramona, Fay. Rahiri IT.. Lois, Marie, Janet, "ui and Sea Royei Lois and Opah made B °f it right round the course, only seconds sera rating them throughout. On the completion of the first round Lois was only one second ahead of Opah, but 3n the second round she improved her position. Ramona hold third place. RACING ON THE MANUKAU. CAPSIZE OF THE DAPHNE. The 1929-30 yachting season was opened on tho Manukau on Saturday, when tho Manulvau Yacht and Motor-bont Club and the Manukau Cruising Club combined in harbour races A full-sail breeze from tho south-west gave tho yachts plenty to do, and 13 crossed the Jine in tlie following order at gunfire:—-Sea Gnome, Nyria Daphne, Sea Toiler, Cham pagno. Shirley, Mist Maid. Sylvia. Una. Sea Horse. Aoma. Drone was 3m and Miss Mac 3m 25s late. All made short boards and were still bunched at the bottom mark. After rounding spinnakers wero oet, and tho Aoma took tho lead, with the Champagne close up The Aoma rounded the top mark at 8h 23m 545, followed by the Champagne at 3h 25m 20s; Sea Horse. 3h 2fis 20s; Sea Gnome. 3h 28m 7s. Daphne. 3h 29m 3s; Sylvia, 3h 30m 15s; Drone, 3b 31m 10s; Miss Mac. 3h 39m 319: Nyria. 3h 12m 355; Una. 3h 'l2m 555; Shirley, 3h -13 m 255; and Mist Maid. 3h 53m 30s Beating down the Mangere shore the Daphne capsized. Sea Gnome and Drone went to her assistance, also the launches Ramona and Katui ihe Aoma and Champagne held their positions and tho finish was timed as follows: —Aoma. 4h 17m 275; Champagne. 4h 21m 365; Sea Horse. -lh 24m. Sylvia, 4h 31m 18s; Miss Mac, 4h 44m 13s Minor mishaps caused the others to retire. Tho result of the raco is held over pending a meeting of tho sail ing committee. In the launch race seven boats were sent away in the following order;—Dione, Rainbow. Ramona. Tawera. Cremorne, Lima, Surprise. The Surpriso soon took the_ lead, which she held throughout The finishing times were:—Surprise. 3h 13m 50s: Diono, 3h 14m 225; Rainbow, 3h 25m 523: Tawera, 3b asm 275; Ramona. 3h 4Gtn 455; Cremorne, 3h iiOni 15s' Elma broke down and retired.
