LAWN TENNIS.

AUCKLANDERS ON TOUR.

MATCH WITH THAMES VALLEY.

COUNTRY PLAYERS* STRENGTH.

[by TELEGRAPH. —OWN con. RESPONDENT. ] TE AROHA, Saturday.

A big fillip was given country tennis this afternoon when a fairly strong Auckland team which included Bartleet. Griffiths and Miss B. Knight, played a representative Thames Valley toani. Tennis has mado wonderful progress in tho Thames Valley since the formation oi the Thames Valley Lawn Tennis Association last year. Every hamlet and settlement now has its courts and clubs, whoso playors regularly moot teams from Thames. Paoroa and To Arohn To-day's invitation to the Auckland players was issued mainly with tho object of deter mining tho standard of country tonnis. Interested watchers of the games were Air. E. Hickson. president of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, and Mr. Harold Clay, oiio of tho selectors for the Auckland Association. Although Auckland . won by eleven matches to two, tho aggregate games scoro of 185 to 118 more correctly indicated tho keenness of tho play. Chief interest centred in tho Bingles match between Bartleet and Dr. A. S. Gray, the Valley's first string. Although unknown in Auckland, Gray had a reputation in tho South island as a New Zealand University representative prior to 1920. Sinco coming to Thames Gvo years ago ho has lacked opportunities of practice with good class men and he did well this after noon to take a set from Bartleet in a three-set match the scores being 4 —o, G—o, ij—2 in favour of Bartleet. Gray won tho first set by exploiting his natural gift for cross-court volley shots, especially tlioso overhead which lie executed perfectly. In tiio second and third sets Bartleet gavo a clever exhibition of skimming tho not which kept Gray on tho base line. Miss Shand, Paeroa, won desorved applause in a 9—7 victory over Miss ft. Knight. Handicapped by lack of height Miss Sliand lost points in the early stages of the game by Boft lobs which wcro severely treated. Benefiting by this lesson Miss Shand cleverly altered her game to score a well-merited >vin. Miss Shand. partnered with Miss Gibb, was also mainly responsible for tho defeat of Misses Knight and M. Macfariano in a doubles match which ran to three sets. In tho men's doubles Bartleet and Griffiths were distinctly lucky oil tho day to beat Gray and Wright in a three-set match. The Aueklttiiders won an interesting first set. G—3. In tho second they wero doing well at tho net until Bartleet struck a bad patch. Wright frequently passed him at tho net. Gray's generalship clinching a win for the country players. Bartleet was very erratic in the third set and Griffiths was given the lion's share of the work He stood up to it well, driving fast on both hands. The Valley pair mado tho score six all. They wero three times in sight of victory but Gray, suffering from a ricked neck, was unable to work his American service. Griffiths scoring tho match winning point. Of the other games tho most interesting was a prolonged singles match between Hubble, Auckland, and Garland. The hitter's strength was a heavily sliced backhand drivo which the Auckland player eventually overcame by running to the net. Discussing the day's play Messrs. Hickson and Clay said they wero agreeably surprised to find such a high standard of tennis in the country districts of tho Auckland province. Mr. Clay snid Gray was a player capable of extending many leading provincial players, while' Miss Shand was a distinct "find" so far as country tennis was concerned. "Any country player capable of taking a set from Bartleet, for instance." said Mr. Clay, "is worth watching. Our visit to-day has convinced us of the necessity for more matches between the city and country players used to nlaying anions themselves. Players like Grav, Wright, Garland. Ruston and indisputably Miss Shand cannot hope to improve their ginno."

Mr. Hickson said:—"We are now doubly clad at bavins accepted the invitation to play Thames Valley, because our eyes havo been opened to the possibilities of country tennis. The Auckland Association will do all it can to assist the development of the gnme in the province."
