STREET IMPROVEMENTS.

PROGRESS OF CITY WORKS.

REPAYING OF QUEEN STREET.

GRAFTON BRIDGE INTERSECTION

Favoured by fine weather, the Auckland City Council has lately made good propress with lis programme of street improvements. Queen Street and tho Grafton Bridgo-Symcnds Street corner have fcsen receiving attention, and tho various works now under way are expected to be comploted before Christmas. Tlio repaying of Queen Street at the Wcllosley Street intersection and below Customs Streot will bring to a close a work authorised two years ago. Tho contract for putting down a new bitumen carpet was let to the Neuchatel Asphalt Company, but tho reinstatement of tho concreto foundations—somo of thorn about 23 yearß old, arid in consequenco badly cracked —is being done by the council.

Upper Qucon Streot is also to receive attention. Tho section outside tho Town Hall has boon paved in concreto, which is to be carried down from White Street to tho Wellosley Street intersection. Tho hill from Whito Street to Karangahape Road is regarded as a little 100 steep for concrete, and it is to receive a bituminous penetration coating. It is hoped to have the paving on tho west side completed before Christmas.

A considerable improvement has been effected at tho corner of Grafton Bridge and Symonds Street nearest to tho tramway shelter. The kerb has been set back, making the footpath lift. 6in. wide and giving space for two 12ft. traffic tracks between the safety zone and the pavement. Beforo the work was done the fact that there was insufficient room for two lines of traffic caused considerable congestion at tho corner at rush hours. The setting back of tho kerb necessitated the removal of a number of telegraph and tramway poles. So far only tho one corner has received attention, but a start is to bo made almost immediately with similar work at tho corner where tho safety zono on tho inward tram track is situated. The work is regarded as being of tho utmost importance, as it will improve immensely the traffic facilitiss at one of tho busiest intersections in thfc city. 1
