NORTH POLE EXPEDITION. LETTER FROM AN ADMIRAL. \ • [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Thursday. Among the New Zealand Government despatches there was found some time ago an interesting and valuable historical document, written by Admiral McClure on board H.M.S. Investigation, at the Bay of Mercy, Polar Sea, on April 10, 1855. So far as is known the letter has never been published. Admiral McClure was commander of an expedition sent out in the search for Sir John Franklin from 1850 to 1854. Admiral McClure had to abandon his ship in the Polar ice in 1854. It is not known how the letter came to New Zealand, or how it came to find a place among official despatches. It is addressed to "My Dear John," and was probably a private letter to a son of General John le Mezurier, Governor of Alderney, an old comrade of Admiral McClure's father, and Admiral McClare's godfather and guardian. The letter deals with the expedition's activities, and refers the recipient to an Admiralty despatch if ha wishes for further particulars.
