MODERN RATIONALISM.
Sir, —Mr. Hugh McHaigh offers himself, in place of the Rev. Fussell, as a victim to the challenge issued by the' New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Rationalism to the Rev. Fussell to debate. I wish to inform Mr. McHaigh that ha seems to be under a misapprehension on this matter. The challenge was, in the tirst place, to the Rev. Fussell, then—"or any one else." The implied meaning being, or any one else of the Rev. Fussell's standing, as representing some recognised body of Christian beliefs." But if Mr. McHaigh will produce his credentials as the accredited representative of some such body, then the association will readily take up his acceptance of its challenge. It will then be necessary for him or his representatives to meet the association's representatives in conference,,when arrangements regarding the subjects and terras of debate will be mutually discussed and decided upon. I ask Mr. McHaig to communicate direct to the association. The defining of "natural causation" can be discussed, along with the . alternate issues "that divide Christianity and Rationalism," at the proposed conference, where both sides would have far greater opportunity of arriving at a definite basis for the proposed debate. H, H. Pearce. Honorary Secretary.
