DROWNED IN SURF.
FATALITY AT THE MOUNT..
BATHER SWEPT OFF FEET.
A VISITOR FROM ROTORUA. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA, Thursday. A drowning accident occurred at Mount Maunganui this morning, resulting in the death of Miss Edith Maud Auberton, aged 22, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Auberton, of Rotorua. Miss -Auberton was spending: a holiday at the Mount with her mother. She went in for a bathe at about 7.30 a.m. to-day. She could not swim. There had been a strong north-easterly gale blowing for tho last three days, which had worked up an exceptionally heavy surf, with great breakers. The deceased and a companion were overwhelmed by an enormous breaker and swept off their fept. Her companion could swim, and when she saw Miss Auberton further out decided to strike for tho shore and procure help. The siren was sounded and the life-saving line was run out immediately, but Miss Auberton was not sighted.
Shortly afterwards her body was washed ashore. Artificial respiration was carried on for over one hour without avail.
An inquest was held this afternoon before Mr. A. F. Tunks, the coroner, who, after hearing evidence, returned a verdict that Miss Auberton was accidentally drowned. The funeral will take place at Rotorua.
