TRAMWAYMEN'S AGREEMENT.
RENEWAL FOR ONE YEAR. WAGES REMAIN THE SAME. The assessors for tho Auckland Transport Board nml tho Tramways Union, who havo been .negotiating with regard to Conditions of work havo agreed to tlio renewal of the agreement which recently expired and the mutual settlement of the dispute had been approved by tho board and the union. Tlio current rates of pay will continue.
The agreement will have a ronewed currency for a> year. After the first four months the union's representatives are to confer with tho management regarding certain matters, and if necessary the assessors on both sides will he consulted.
As a result of a special conference between representatives of tho Local Bodies Labourers' Union, the Tramways Union and tho Transport Board, it has been agreed that facilities shall bo granted to any men transferring from the Local Bodies Labourers' Union to the Tramways Union at no cost or inconvenience to themselves. Any new men employed shall automatically become members of the Tramways Union. Stand-by time is to bo paid in wet weather, namoly, two hours to casual employees, and there is no obligation ort the employer to supply waterproof capes. Men employod up to three months may bo dismissed without notice. After three months' service and up to six employees shall receive three days' notice of dismissal and after six months a week a notico must be given. When the renewal of the agreement was reported to the Transport Board yesterday, tho chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, expressed satisfaction at the amicable manner in which the settlement had been reached. The union's representatives, he said, appreciated the difficulties in which the board was placed with its tramways extensions and showed a disposition to assist. Mr. E. 11. Potter, who was one of thw board's assessors, paid a tribute to the union's representatives for the amicable manner in which they had carried on their part of the settlement. He specially mentioned tho assistance given by Mr. J. Roberts, secretary of tho Alliance of Labour, whoso intercession led to the renewal of negotiations between the two bodies after a deadlock lasting several months.
