OFFENCES BY LABOURER,
HOMES ENTERED DURING SYNOD
" Accused is at present awaiting sentence on two charges of breaking and entering at Thames and Waihi. He broke into the houses of clergymen during their absence at the synod and was doing the circuit," said Chief-Detective Hammond
in the Police Court yesterday, when a further charge was preferred against Francis Vernon, aged 59, labourer. Accused was charged with breaking and entering by day tho dwelling of the Rev. { D. Hird at Opotiki and stealing a silver watch and chain, valued at £ls. Emanuel Kissin, pawnbroker, in business at 8, Victoria Street, said that on September 28 accused pawned a watch and chain vjjb him for 13s, giving the inane of Francis Ye'inon, labourer, Tneatua.
A statement made by accused was produced by Detective O'Snliiv.m. Vernon stated that the reason lie. broke into the houso was that ho wont to tho district to obtain a position, but found 'hat he could not get work, and spent all his mono;. Ho then broke into the dwelling to obtain money to return to Opotiki, The watch which h.id been recovered from tho pawnbroker's shop was tho watch ho had stolen.
Accused pleaded guilty and was committed to tho Supreme Court for sentence.
