DAIRY WORKERS' DISPUTE.
UNIQUE POINT RAISED.
REFERENCE TO THE COURT.
[by telegraph.—press association.] PALMERSTON NORTH. Tuesday.
A meeting of the Conciliation Council, presided over by Mr. P. Hally, was held at Falmerston North to-day, in connection with the Wellington district butter and cheese factory workers' dispute. The employers' representatives urged the continuation of the award on the district basis, but the workers supported the Dominion award policy, which was suggested by their federation. All companies, it was considered, should be put on the same footing in respect to wages and working conditions, and, where it was necessary to vary local conditions, this could be provided for in the Dominion charter.
After some debate on this particular point the commissioner said anything he could suggest would not help to improve the position. The circumstance was unique in his experience. Ho suggested that the dispute should be referred to the Arbitration Court, which would probably determine the point at issue and request the representatives' further attendance as assessors in a local or Dominion conciliation council. This proposal was agreed to.
