ENDORSEMENT OF CHEQUE.
ELDERLY WOMAN IN COURT. PLEA OF NOT GUILTY ENTERED. Charges of falsely endorsing a cheque for £lB 9s 4d in the name of F. Sholton, and of stealing a letter containing tho cheque, the property of Frederick Shelton, were preferred against Sarah 'Jane Brown, an elderly woman, in the Police Court yesterday. Chief-Detective Hammond said that accused lived in a house at 11, Hardinge Street, owned by Shelton. A firm of land ngents sent a cheque for £lB 9s 4d to .Shelton, a,nd it was alleged that this came into the hands of accused, who forged the endorsement and obtained goods for the full amount.
Detective Sneddon said that when he interviewed accused she denied that she ]], id forged the endorsement. On searching her house none of the goods delivered under the order paid for by the cheque was found. Accused made a statement, in v.hich she, said that at the beginning of dune a stranger stayed for one night at the boarding house in Hardinge Street where she lived. Prior to his arrival two parcels were delivered and on the morning following his arrival tlio stranger asked for and was given them. He tlien Wt. The man gave his name as Foster Slielton, l;ut said that ho was not the landlord. He appeared to be much younger than Shelton. Since the one night the man was in the house accused had missed a number of papers relating to her pension of £2 5s a week. After further evidence had been heard licensed pleaded not guilty and was committed to. the Supreme Court for trial, bail being allowed in one surety of £SO.
