PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.
WORK AMONG CHILDREN*
SOCIAL SERVICE ASSOCIATION.
T'he annual meeting of the Anckland Presbyterian Orphanages and Social Service was held in St. Andrew's Hall yesterday afternoon. The Rev. W. D. Morrison-Sutherland, moderator af the presbytery, presided. Mr. H. W. Shove, hon. treasurer, in moving the adoption of the report, drew attention to the fact that the accounts of both the association and the Leslie Presbyterian Orphanage Trust showed a small
excess'of expenditure over income, and a bank overdraft.
Mr, E. Burch, who seconded the motion, which was carried, expressed the opinion that, the corner had been turned financially. He thought that in the few weeks since bis appointment as social service agent, the Rev. T. Haliiday had shown that he waa the right man for the work. The Rev. G. Budd, chairman of the general committee, referred to the continued existence of problems of social service, and appealed for a wider vision of the Church's call in regard to them. A great deal more should be done toward the relief of suffering among people in tlie city who, perhaps, were not definitely attached to anv church and needed to be sought cut by Christian workers. Women's work also called for further development. Good work was being dona in the hospitals, but room existed for aid to be given to the ministers in regard to the private hospitals and the various homos, The co-operation of lay workers was essential in these and other directions. He paid a tribute to the service being eiven by the staffs at the homes controlled Dy the association. * Mr. Duncan McPherson, former city missioner, spoke Vigorously for a few minutes on the subject of lapsed Presbyterians. Tho chairman expressed pleasure at the prcsonce of Air. McPherson, who is in his 90th year. The Rev. Evan R. Harries expressed a hope that the time was not far distant when they would be rejoicing at the establishment of a fine homo for old people in Auckland. It was needed, he thought, even more urgently than orphanages. Mr. Haliiday reported on the progress of tho work under his charge. He said that, there were 116 children in the homes. Mr. R. L. Stewart and Mrs. C. W. Webster also spoke. A Collection yielded £lO.
