JEWELLERY STOLEN.
THEFT IN SHIP'S HOLD.
FURTHER REMAND FOR WEEK. Charged with stealing jewellery, valued at £9 15s, the property of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, on October 2, Leonard William Sharp, aged 51, a member of the crew of the steamer Tamaroa, appeared for sentence in the Police Court yesterday after pleading guilty a week ago. , Chief-Detective Hammond said that a case in the hold of the Tamaroa was broken open and a package of jewellery stolen. Some of the jewellery was traced to accused, who had endeavoured to dispose of it, but there was £3O worth still missing, regarding which Sharp would say nothing. The steamer was at present at Lyttclton, but would be at Auckland on October 24. Mr. Hammond suggested that accused should bo sent to' prison until that date. Mr. Noble said that accused declared he found the jewellery between two winches on board. Ho was a decent, hardworking man, and was a naval pensioner, having served with the Navy in the war. Accused stated that if ho were convicted ho would loso his pension of 25s a week. " I do not want to injure the man for the rest of his life," remarked Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. He remanded accused for another week to enable it to bo definitely established whether he would lose his pension if a conviction were entered. An order for the return of the jewellery was made. '
