, COMPETITION,, OF MOTORS.
' IMPROVEMENT .IN SERVICES. ——vHv*
Railwav. authorities'in South Africa are . meeting "competition, from Vroad motorj transport by carrying the war into the:' enemy's camp, according to v ' • . Price, a Johannesburg railway official, who arrived at Auckland by the Ulimaroa yesterday.' . "Road and rail transport are in com-, petition all over the world and South ■ Africa is no exception, Mr. Pngg "The South African Railway Department accordingly inaugurated motor services to operate in conjunction with the railways and the business is being carried on most successfully. A Complete 'feeder system of motor 'transport is'being organised to servo all the railheads, and it appears that isolated districts will be gradually opened up as a result of the competition. "The trains themselves' have been speeded up, and tho express from Capetown to Johannesburg. now .• covers tho distance of 1000 miles in 29 hours. It is only natural that, i:n order to withstand road transport competition, the railway services have to be improved and tills is the great aim of South Africa."
