GROWING OF TOBACCO.

NEW SEASON'S PLANTING.

AREA LARGELY INCREASED,

Although the results of tho disposal of last year's tobacco crop are not yet to band, increased planting is being undertaken this season. Last year there was approximately 100 acres in the Auckland district devoted to tobacco cultivation, but during tho coming planting season at least three syndicates intend to sow areas aggregating 300 acres. „The largest cf these will bo aft Brigham's Creek, on' the upper reaches of tho Waitemata Harbour Adjacent to it, at Riverhead, another concern is planting 50 acres, whilo a similar is being planted at To Hana, near Wellsford, by, a third company. In addition, plantings will bo undertaken at Rotorua and Hokianga, although on tho present prospects it is thought that those at tho latter place will not be as extensive as previously. A great deal of tobacco is" also grown by people on small holdings, tut it is difficult for the Department of Agriculture to keep a check of these. Many applications aro made for seed and frequently tho departmental officers hear no more of its fate until somo small grower puts in an application for assistance in tho disposal of his crop. The results depend largely upon tho weather and tha best product is grown in a hot, dry season, otherwise the leaf becomes too succulent and is difficult to cure. At present the department is not making any effort to stimulate the planting of tobacco, because it has, as,,yct, no information of tho results of past efforts.. In the meantime faith in tho infant industry is indicated by tho additional areas that are being planted, even though tho growers are still working in the dark.
