POSITION OF CANADA.

WATCHING UNITED STATES. MINISTER WANTS FREE HAND. Australian Press Association—United Service (Received September 30, G.-45 p.m.) QUEBEC. Sept. 29. The Federal Minister of Customs and Excise, Mr. W. D. Euler, to-day commented upon the move at the Assembly of the League of Nations for a reduction or abolition of tariffs, aird the proposal for a two years' tariff truce.

Pending possible developments in the United States, said Mr. Euler, Canada should keep her hands absolutely free. The United States was now working on flie tariff with a view to increasing it and shutting out Canada's products. He did not think it would bo justifiable foi Canada to be open to countries which were closing their doors to her. The Minister has returned from Genova, where he was one of Canada's delegates to the Assembly.
