PAINTING CONTEST.
WORK OF YOUNG ARTISTS. The work submitted it) tho recent Novelty Painting and Junior Contests was far in advance of that roceived for previous competitions, and tho prize-win-ners are to bo congratulated on the patience and skill shown in their entries. Tho " novelty " idea was a distinct success, and it was most interesting to examine all tbo different types of paintings, some dono in " splash-work," some coloured in pen-and-ink, sonic in dots and dashes, or all straight lines. Jean Aloir sent in a most realistic coloured sketch of a crocheted d'oyley, Tom Lidgard, a wonderful green painting of a fish in a blue under-sea garden, Owen Tancved a most original oil-painting *' blot " picture, Jack Crilppen, a hectic shooting star—bright green—swooping down to a pink world, through a yellow sky dotted witn blue stars, the sketch being appropriately titled " Tho Astronomer's Nightmare!" I was, indeed, proud of our young artists when I looked over all these novel and original entries, and my only regret was that tho prizo list could not be extended to twice the length!
