BETTY'S BIRTHDAY GIFT.

By OLIVE HYDE, Euihi Street, Kotorua (age 15).

Oh! how pleased Botty was when her mother gave her a basket when sho came down to breakfast on the morning of hor birthday. " Bo very careful, Betty," her mother told her. Sho lifted the lid and out sprang a dear little grey kitten. "Oh what a dariing!" she cried, as she picked it up. " I shall namo it Fluffy." She found a pretty red ribbon in her drawer and put in round the kitten's neck. Fluffy was given a bowl of milk, when a beautiful butterfly settled on the side of tho bowi.

" What a beauty!" cried Betty, as the butterfly stayed on the side of the bowl for a few minutes and then fluttered awav.

Fluffy is full of mischief, and I shall tell you of one incident. Betty had gone to school, and Fluffy had been given her bowl of milk. She mado her way to a tablo in the kitchen, whero mother kept her work basket. Some pieces of coloured wool were dangling from the basket, and it was this that attracted Flufly's attention. She jumped on to the table and

began to play. Balls of wool and reels of cotton became twisted together. Over and over she rolled, tossing balls of wool about until she became so entangled thai she could not get. up. She wriggled about, trying to get free, but all in vain. Fluffy was lying thcro for a-quarter of an hour, when Betty camo running in from school. What a surprise she re ceived to see Fluffy with wool and cotton wound round and round her, but she soon set her free, and then there was the task of untangling all the wool and cotton. J)ear, naughty Fluff.
